FromSoftware is known for creating unique and challenging boss fights. Whether you’re playing Dark Souls, Bloodborne, or Elden Ring, the developers always have some tricks to keep players on their toes. The boss fights in Shadow of the Erdtree are no different.

The first major boss in Shadow of the Erdtree, Divine Beast Dancing Lion, sets the stage for the rest of the expansion.

This peculiar boss looks like a group of people inside an elaborate lion costume, and its moves are as impressive as its appearance. It uses various types of elemental damage.

In this article, I will show you How to Beat Divine Beast Dancing Lion in Shadow of the Erdtree.

When you first enter the arena of Divine Beast Dancing Lion in Shadow of the Erdtree, located at Belurat Tower Settlement, you can summon Freyja.

Summoning Freyja will increase the Divine Beast’s health, but she can help distract the beast, making the fight easier for you.

Alternatively, you can choose not to summon Freyja and instead use your own Spirit Ashes to take the beast’s attention.

Whether or not to use summons is your choice, and you can use both Freyja and Spirit Ashes, or neither.

If you decide to use summons, the Mimic Tear and Greatshield Soldiers are excellent options.

The Mimic Tear helps stack bleed damage, while the Greatshield Soldiers, being four in number, are great for distracting the Divine Beast.

The Divine Beast is very agile, similar to Maliketh, with a wide range of moves and multiple phases within the same health bar. It uses various elements, making it challenging to prepare for all its attacks.

To best prepare, we recommend the Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman to reduce physical damage.

Additionally, equip the Boltdrake Talisman +2 (or the +3 version available later in the DLC) or the Bull-Goat Set to reduce lightning damage.

Lastly, have some Thawfrost Boluses ready. You might not need them if you keep your distance during the Frost phase, but they are good to have just in case you get hit by Frostbite.

Phase 1: Physical Damage

At the start of the fight, the Divine Beast uses physical attacks. It often fires debris projectiles at you, which are easy to dodge, but it may also charge at you and perform various bashing attacks.

During this phase, dodge toward or past the Divine Beast’s attacks rather than away. This keeps you close enough to attack when there’s an opening. Watch the boss’s movements carefully as it flips, charges spews debris and slams the ground.

When the Divine Beast spins and spews debris, take this time to heal or apply buffs. However, be ready for it to attack again soon.

A critical move to watch for is when the Divine Beast rears its head. It might look like a good time to attack, but it’s better to wait and dodge its mouth when it lunges.

If caught, the beast will chew and spit you out, causing significant damage. I barely survived this attack with 52 Vigor, so be cautious.

Phase 2: Elemental Abilities

When the Divine Beast’s health drops to around 60%, it starts using Lightning, Wind, and Frost, switching elements every 30 seconds.

You’ll know it’s changing elements when it leaps into the air and screeches.

Although its moves remain mostly the same, here are some specifics for each element:

  • Lightning Phase: The beast will summon lightning strikes around the arena. You can avoid these by watching the ground and dodging away from the beast.
  • Frost Phase: The beast performs a Frost stomp, creating spikes on the floor that build up Frostbite if you stay close. When it goes airborne and conjures frost, prepare to roll away or jump when it lands. Use Thawfrost Boluses if you get Frostbite.
  • Wind Phase: Similar to the Physical phase, but with gusts of wind that can knock you over. Dodge towards the beast to avoid the wind attacks and be cautious of tornadoes following its charges.

Phase 3: Rapid Elemental Switching

When the Divine Beast’s health drops to 25%, it continues to switch between Lightning, Wind, and Frost, but at a faster pace. The moves stay the same, but you’ll need to be quick to adapt to the changing elements.

Remember to dodge into Frost and Wind attacks, away from Lightning, and consider summoning Freyja if you need extra help.

During my successful attempt, keeping the pressure on the Divine Beast seemed to make it stay in the Frost phase longer, allowing us to defeat it more easily.

Good luck, and stay vigilant!
